El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo

Do you remember that post I wrote last year about luxury trains? Well today I want to talk about the Transcantábrico: a luxury train to travel the North of Spain on rails.

But the trip is not a simple train ride. In addition to its rooms and luxury cuisine, it includes lots of excursions along the Cantabrian coast.

The tour starts in San Sebastián. With guided tour and lunch in this romantic city. From there a luxury bus takes passengers to Bilbao, where the train journey really begins. The first night is in Carranza. Because one of the characteristics of this train is that it does not advance during the night, but rather that it stays overnight in a station and it is allowed to go out to walk its streets.

The second day begins by visiting the main points of interest in Bilbao. Then continue the journey to Santander. The night is spent in this elegant city with entrance to the Casino included for those who want it. The third day continues the journey by train to Unquera, on the border between Cantabria and Asturias. The excursion planned for this day begins with a visit to the town of Potes, to continue with a thermal circuit in the Spa of La Hermida and end up visiting Comillas. The night is spent in Cabezón de la Sal.

Santillana del Mar and the Altamira cave are the perfect plan for the fourth day. That will end, already in Asturias, in the fishing village of Llanes. The fifth day is loaded with art and nature. Starts entering the Picos de Europa National Park, and then visit the legendary Covadonga Sanctuary. Then the train journey continues to the city of Oviedo to end up sleeping in Candás.

Aviles and Gijón will be the destinations of the sixth day, which will end in Luarca. And little by little the train leaves Asturias to enter Galician lands. The first stop is Ribadeo, from where the bus leaves to visit the famous Las Catedrales beach. Then the train will head to Viveiro, where the passengers will spend the night. The last station is Ferrol. End of the journey by train but not the trip, which ends in Santiago de Compostela with the visit of this wonderful city.

From San Sebastián to Santiago de Compostela throughout the north coast in luxury class, for “only” 5.500€ per person. Who are encouraged? Here you have a video of España Directo tv program and its website where you can see all the information.
